About this skill

Wheel-End / Lubricant Inspection

Wheel-ends are a high-risk component. A wheel-off-axle event can be fatal. Inspection and maintenance per § 396.3.

Types of wheel-end design

  • Oil bath — wheel hub filled with oil, sealed with O-ring
  • Grease packed — hub packed with grease, sealed with bearing dust shield
  • Oil-bath with breather — slight ventilation to prevent pressure buildup

What to inspect

  • Oil level (oil-bath designs) — usually visible through fill hole or sight glass
  • Visible leaks — oil running down rim or onto tire
  • Bearing temperature — excessive heat indicates failure
  • Wheel play — should be minimal
  • Wheel run-out — wobble indicates imbalance or bearing wear

Lubricant interval

  • Manufacturer recommendation typically every 50,000-100,000 miles
  • Different oils have different lifespans
  • Driver should check oil level at every weekly fuel-and-inspection

Wheel-off cases

A wheel-off-axle event is investigated as:

  • Manufacturer defect
  • Maintenance shortfall (bearing failure)
  • Operator error (overtorque, under-torque on lug nuts)
  • Overloading

Carrier responsibilities

  • Maintenance log per § 396.3
  • Track wheel-end lubricant changes
  • Lug nut re-torque schedule (typically 50, 200, 500 miles after wheel-off-then-on)
  • Annual inspection includes wheel-end check (§ 396.17)

Compass tracking

Compass Vehicles module:

  • Tracks wheel-end maintenance events
  • Lubricant change scheduling
  • Bearing inspection records

CFR citations

  • 49 CFR § 393.41
  • 49 CFR § 393.43
  • 49 CFR § 396.3
