Activation
This is the description your AI agent reads to decide when to run this skill — the better it matches your request, the more reliably it fires.
Extract text, tables, and structured data from documents using Azure Document Intelligence (@azure-rest/ai-document-intelligence). Use when processing invoices, receipts, IDs, forms, or building custom document models.Key capabilities
- →Process documents via prebuilt models for invoices, receipts, IDs, and tax forms
- →Perform OCR to extract text, tables, and selection marks
- →Train custom document models using Azure Blob Storage training data
- →Build and execute document classifiers to categorize file types
- →List and manage existing document models via pagination
- →Retrieve service information including custom model usage limits
How it works
The client sends a document source to the service, which returns an operation ID. The application then uses a long-running poller to monitor the status and retrieve the final analysis results once complete.
Inputs & outputs
When to use azure-ai-document-intelligence-ts
- →Extracting data from invoices
- →Processing identity documents
- →Parsing complex forms to JSON
- →Building automated document workflows

Polling Pattern
import DocumentIntelligence, {
isUnexpected,
getLongRunningPoller,
AnalyzeOperationOutput
} from "@azure-rest/ai-document-intelligence";
// 1. Start operation
const initialResponse = await client
.path("/documentModels/{modelId}:analyze", "prebuilt-layout")
.post({ contentType: "application/json", body: { urlSource } });
// 2. Check for errors
if (isUnexpected(initialResponse)) {
throw initialResponse.body.error;
}
// 3. Create poller
const poller = getLongRunningPoller(client, initialResponse);
// 4. Optional: Monitor progress
poller.onProgress((state) => {
console.log("Status:", state.status);
});
// 5. Wait for completion
const result = (await poller.pollUntilDone()).body as AnalyzeOperationOutput;
Key Types
import DocumentIntelligence, {
isUnexpected,
getLongRunningPoller,
paginate,
parseResultIdFromResponse,
AnalyzeOperationOutput,
DocumentClassifierBuildOperationDetailsOutput
} from "@azure-rest/ai-document-intelligence";
Best Practices
- Use getLongRunningPoller() - Document analysis is async, always poll for results
- Check isUnexpected() - Type guard for proper error handling
- Choose the right model - Use prebuilt models when possible, custom for specialized docs
- Handle confidence scores - Fields have confidence values, set thresholds for your use case
- Use pagination - Use
paginate()helper for listing models - Prefer neural mode - For custom models, neural handles more variation than template
When not to use it
- →Synchronous document processing requirements
- →Scenarios requiring non-REST based client implementations
Prerequisites
Limitations
- →Requires long-running polling for all analysis operations
- →Custom model training is restricted to Azure Blob Storage sources
How it compares
This approach uses a REST-based client function that requires explicit polling for asynchronous operations rather than using a standard class-based synchronous interface.
